Little Mona at the Open Mic
Little Mona is at it again, this time with an accomplice.
But honestly, sometimes Little Mona’s 2007 shenanigans turn out to be sweet.
(ZAC sits on a box on a bare stage and plays an acoustic guitar and sings "One Man Guy" by Loudon Wainwright III. There's another box further upstage and to ZAC's right; it's not in his line of vision. ZAC isn't the best singer or guitarist, but his heart is in it. He's at an open mic.)
ZAC
(Singing)
People will know when they see this show, the kind of a guy I am
They'll recognize just what I stand for and what I just can't stand
They’ll perceive what I believe in and what I know is true
And they’ll recognize I’m a one man guy, always was, through and through
(At this precise moment, LITTLE MONA appears from behind the other box and sits down. ZAC doesn’t notice.)
(ZAC continues singing.)
(A plastic giraffe head puppet, who is nameless, appears next to LITTLE MONA, and places a bowl of cherries on the box. Together they make a decision, and then start to push their box closer to ZAC’s.)
(ZAC continues to make his way through the song.)
(And now they are right next to ZAC, and he finally sees them. He is angry and caught off guard, but he can’t let that show. Neither can he let these characters distract him further from his performance; the show must go on.)
(ZAC has almost made it to the last chorus.)
(And, naturally, LITTLE MONA and the plastic giraffe head puppet now join ZAC on the last chorus, swaying as they sing. They move closer to him with each word, and climb onto available parts of him.)
ZAC and LITTLE MONA and GIRAFFE HEAD
‘Cause I’m a one many guy in the mornin, same in the afternoon
One man guy when the sun goes down, I whistle me a one man tune
(LITTLE MONA gets very loud here.)
One man guy, one many guy, only kinda guy to be
(By the last line, LITTLE MONA and the giraffe head are each on, next to, or around ZAC’s head and face. Everyone sings very quietly on the last line.)
I’m a one man guy, I’m a one man guy, and that one man guy is me
(They all wait a couple of beats to let the song land. Then LITTLE MONA gently bites ZAC’s ear, and the giraffe head bites ZAC’s chin.)
(ZAC graciously accepts the audience’s applause, doing his best to ignore the puppets.)
ZAC
Thank you.
(The giraffe head retrieves a cherry from the bowl. ZAC is still accepting the applause.)
Thank you.
(While ZAC is thanking the audience, the giraffe head stuffs the cherry into ZAC’s mouth. In a generous act of service.)
